Julia Covelle is an artist based in Greater Boston whose work play’s with themes of time, perception and social construction functioning as a vessel for the exploration of people in relation to our world.
Seeking the mundane she examines both the known and unknown through figurative observations. An archival process of the complexity of interpersonal relationships and human narratives enhanced through characteristic elements of line and color as tools of note taking in her ethnographic approach to the world.
Julia has a bachelor's degree in visual arts and sociology from the College of the Holy Cross and has shown work publicly throughout Worcester, Boston, Somerville and Barcelona.
Statement
My work is an archival process of the world around me. Most recent iterations of work specifically focused on the external, noting the seemingly mundane and seemingly insignificant passing of people (strangers) every day.
Through my work I hope to deconstruct this indifference to both the strangers and known people around me, harnessing the practice of presence, observation and curiosity for the world, the people and the stories unknowingly encountered and often ignored.
My work becomes an ethnographic study of the world around me as lived by the people around me. Mark making and the principle of drawing is at the core of my practice as lines become a form of note taking and an extension of a moment.
Opening oneself up to the mundane in humanity is to build an appreciation for it. My work hopes to capture and draw attention to societal existence, spanning from its joys to its harmful constructs, sharing quiet narratives to shed light into all it entails.
